Tallahassee, Fla:
A cement truck slams into the back of a school bus in Tallahassee Friday afternoon and critically injures at least one of the students.
Police say the bus was carrying 27 children. It was stopped in the left lane at a red light when the truck crashed into the rear of the bus. Seven children and the driver of another vehicle were rushed to the hospital. A hospital spokeswoman says six children were being treated for injuries.
The impact of the crash tipped the cement truck onto its side, while the bus smashed into the back of a minivan. There’s no word on the condition of the driver or any passengers in the minivan, but police say the truck driver is OK.
Angela Williams was one of many parents who raced to the scene to check on their children. She says her son and niece were on the bus, but were not hurt. Williams says her niece had been assigned to a seat in the very back of the bus, but today, she was reassigned to a seat closer to the front.
Police say the bus was taking the children from an elementary school to a Boys and Girls Club after school let out for the day.
Many of the children who weren’t hurt in the crash were taken to a nearby business where their parents were able to pick them up.
