Homeowners might have more trouble with termites this season. So, pest control companies are gearing up for the phone calls.
Experts say termites start rolling in around early spring every year in Florida. However, the recent rain will bring even more this season.
Termites cause billions of dollars in damage every year, but exterminators are worried this year.
“Most people are saying this year with the excessive rain that we’ve had. We’ll start seeing more swarms,” Brock Lawn and Pest Control Manager James Strickland said.
Metrological research says the panhandle saw about 20 inches of rain in the past four months. That’s nearly 8 inches over average but a perfect forecast for termites.
“Most commonly you will see a swarm after a day or two of rain,” Strickland said. “When the sun comes out is when we expect to start getting calls.”
Brock Lawn and Pest Control got about 4 calls just in the last couple of days, and that is just the beginning. Strickland says he expects calls to pick up when the weather is a little warmer.
He says homeowners can protect themselves though, by performing a pretreatment ahead of time.
Strickland says the termite season already started and will probably end sometime in May.
