The Freeport Bulldogs are having their best season since 2003.
The Dogs are district champions and heading to the playoffs.
There is one connection from this year’s team that links it to the ‘03 team; a member of the Adams family is leading the way on the line.
For Steven Adams, the journey to being a starting offensive lineman for the Troy Trojans has been a long one.
“When I left home, everyone was telling me, I wasn’t going to make it. The only real encouragement I had was from my friends and family,” said Troy University guard Steven Adams.
After graduating from Freeport High School in 2004, Steven walked-on to the Troy University football team, and by his redshirt junior season, he was a starting guard for the three-time defending Sun Belt champions.
“I dreamed about it. I never thought I would be playing against the Tim Tebow’s and all the other SEC guys, nothing like that,” said Adams.
One person that has always believed in Steven is his 16 year-old brother Tyler, a junior lineman for the Freeport Bulldogs.
“I’m real proud of him. He’s doing a great job. He’s having a real good season this year. He’s doing a real good job,” said Freeport center Tyler Adams.
As you can probably imagine, they have a nice sibling rivalry.
“Growing up, we didn’t get along as much when I was younger. I was the younger brother and he didn’t really like me being around,” said Tyler.
“Oh, yeah. It’s always constant competition with us. I think me being hard on him really made him what he is today. He doesn’t take any crap from anybody,” Steven stated.
Steven and Tyler are separated by six years in age, and now live 100 miles apart, but even with the distance, they’ve only grown closer.
“I talk to him everyday. This year they really have a talented team where they can win again. I’ve pretty much given him advice on stuff like getting ready for the next opponent. Tips that they are going to do,” said Steven.
“He helps me out, pulls me to the side and gives me tips, just simply stuff, like getting my feet right and getting my steps right,” said Tyler.
It all began right here on the sidelines at Freeport High School for Steven Adams, now he is a starting offensive lineman at Troy University. His younger brother Tyler begins here as well and will try to take it to the next level just like big brother.
“I’d love to take it to the next level, but I don’t know. Whatever I can get, Troy, that’s an option yeah,” stated Tyler.
“I don’t know, we’ll see. From what I hear he is doing good things. We’ll see what happens,” said Steven.
Steven the Troy Trojans are one win away from clinching their fourth straight Sun Belt title.
Tyler and the Freeport Bulldogs are at home this Friday night against the Blountstown Tigers in the first round of the playoffs.
