Panama City, Fla:

One day after Hurricane Gustav made landfall in Louisiana the number of evacuees needing assistance at the Red Cross shelter in Panama City is going up, not down.

Red Cross officials say that’s because many people came to Panama City only expecting to stay a night or two and rented hotel rooms.  Now that evacuees won’t be allowed back to their homes until Thursday or Friday many are checking out of hotels and checking in at the shelter so they will not run out of money. 

Red Cross volunteers served dinner to about 60 people Tuesday night.

The shelters in Marianna have closed, but the director of the Central Panhandle Chapter of the Red Cross says the shelter in Panama City will remain open as long as the need exists.
