A private school’s closure becomes a public concern.
Economic pressures forced Panama City Christian School to close it’s doors, and some in our community worry other private schools will follow suit.
Today, school officials told News13 that they prepared for, and they anticipated the worst. So, they’re ready for the future. But, it’s family funds that pay for private tuition and parents say they’re willing to make sacrifices in tough times.
School is a child’s second home. To many parents, it’s important that the things kids learn in school reflect the values they’re taught in the household. That’s why Jennifer Wit sends her two children to Covenant Christian.
“[It’s] knowing that the teachers that are taking my place and educating my children, are teaching them how I would teach them,” said Wit.
But, life lessons come with a price. Covenant Christian is a private school and tuition ranges from $1,000 to $5,000 a year.
“We feel the crunch when tuition is due, but we just have a commitment to Christian education for our family,” said Wit.
To parents, tuition cost is just a bunch of numbers. The Christian teachings that their children learn are invaluable. And, that’s why they’re willing to make an economic sacrifice if they have to.
“It’s worth it to sacrifice a little bit of money every month, to send them to a Christian school,” said Tyler Bingham, parent of two Covenant Christian students.
Despite the economic downturn, high levels of parental commitment help keep the school in financial shape.
“We were able to utilize the resources in a way that would prevent us from reaching desperate measures,” said Covenant Christian’s Debbi Earnest.
As families work the numbers at home, the school works to keep the budget balanced.
“Covenant is here to stay. Covenant is entering its 27th year as Covenant Christian school, and I do not anticipate anything other than great things happening at Covenant,” said Earnest.
