Apalachicola, Fla:

A small community pays a big tribute to its veterans as leaders unveiled the only Three Soldiers Statue replica in the country.  Bringing out hundreds of vets and supporters, the ceremony included several key speakers and presentations.

“I am so proud that we are finally getting recognized for the things that we did,” said Vietnam veteran attendee Robert Fry.

“Freedom is not free and that’s what this is all about to show what sacrifices have been made,” said veteran Charles LaCroy.

Seven years in the making came together when leaders unveiled the memorial; attracting hundreds for the ceremony.

“It’s a great opportunity not only for Apalachicola to remember its veterans but the entire Southeast,” said State Representative Will Kendrick, “While we all had family members at one time or another that have lost lives and paid the ultimate sacrifice I think it’s always true for a small community to show that we do come together in times like these.”

The statue displays three soldier in accurate equipment, with faces showing loyalty but anguish.  The average age for a Vietnam soldier was 19 years old.  Statue designers inscribed more meaning on the back, describing the youth and diversity of those who fought, bringing back memories for some.

“When I came back from Vietnam I didn’t have the support that we have now,” said Fry, “and I am very proud that things have turned around like they are.”

Others, like the Three Soldiers Servicemen South Founder, Jimmy Mosconis, were left almost speechless.

“Just had this emotion in me like I can’t explain,” he said, “The fact that we got in our small town something that’s in our American capital… I think it’s a really amazing American story.”

You can still be part of the memorial.  For $250, you can buy a brick to dedicate to a veteran. The bricks are placed around the flagpole at the Veterans Memorial Plaza.  Click here to find out how to buy a brick.
