Tallahassee, Fla:
Tropical Storm Paloma is steadily strengthening in the Caribbean Sea and could be on track to become a rare November hurricane.
State Meteorologist Ben Nelson says there have been only about 40 November hurricanes in recorded history. Paloma is the 16th named storm of what’s been a very active hurricane season.
It formed in the warm waters of the western Caribbean, exactly where storms are most likely to form this time of year.
Nelson says Paloma has a chance of becoming a major hurricane of Category 3 strength. That would be very unusual - it’s happened only six times since 1900. The last one was Hurricane Michelle in 2001.
It looks as though a cold front moving down from the Midwest will push Paloma northeast through Cuba and into the Bahamas.
Nelson says look for an increase in ocean swells and rip currents along Florida’s Atlantic Coast, but right now, no portion of south Florida or the Keys falls within the error cone.
Nelson says if you’re heading out to the beaches for Veterans Day, keep an eye on the flags and follow the instructions from lifeguards.
He says it looks as though Florida will be on the dry side of the storm, so he does not expect heavy rain from the system. But it could bring isolated showers in the Keys and southeast Florida this weekend.
