The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is now focusing on about a dozen reports of missing people that have come in since a body was discovered at Springhill Landfill.
“We’ve taken a lot of calls from people who have people missing and we’re trying to work from that direction,” Jackson County Sheriff’s Office Maj. Donnie Branch said Wednesday.
Authorities were called to the landfill in Campbellton Monday afternoon after workers discovered what appeared to be the body of a white male with reddish brown hair.
Branch said the department has received 10 to 15 calls from different places in the landfill’s waste service area, which includes several counties in Florida, Alabama and Georgia.
None of the missing person reports are from Jackson County, Branch said. The closest of the missing person reports are one out of Dothan, Ala., and one out of southwest Georgia.
He said authorities have concluded work at the crime scene in the landfill, and that no other crime scenes have been established as of yet.
As of Wednesday the sheriff’s office had not received information from the Medical Examiner’s Officer in Panama City as to the cause of death or DNA test results.
Investigators estimated the man died within 48 hours of his body being discovered.
Those with information about this case may contact the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office at (850) 482-9624.
