Valentine ’s Day is quickly approaching. This year many don’t have the money to spend on their sweetie, but that doesn’t mean the holiday can’t be special.

Captain Anderson’s is quiet and empty now, but co-owner Nick Patronis says this weekend, Valentine’s weekend, will be one of their busiest of the season.

Like many restaurants, Captain Anderson’s will open up early, offering champagne half price. Patronis says it’s important to show up early because anywhere you go will be crowded:  “…what we’re doing this year and we’ve never done it before, we’re going to be open on that Valentine’s Sunday and the crowds are going to be so crazy that we’re opening at 3:30.”

Red Lobster in Panama City is also offering specials, says manager Richard Chaillou “…it’s a 29.99 special. You get your choice of two full entrees, two salads and your sides, and a choice of appetizer or dessert.”

The City of Panama City is promoting “Fall in Love with Downtown.” Shops and restaurants like Bayou Joe’s have special offers for customers as well. This year they’re offering a special 4 course meal, according to owner Kevin Shea: “We’re creating a whole special all weekend long doing some different things that our creative cooks have come up with in the back.”

Just because it’s Valentine’s Day doesn’t mean you have to go out to eat. Chef Mike Meek of Liza’s Kitchen says there are many inexpensive dishes you can cook right at home:  “…the first one that would be very easy would be a breakfast in bed. Get a heart-shaped cookie cutter and do heart-shaped pancakes … and serve it in bed. You’re in pajamas and just kind of lounge around and have a nice little dinner or breakfast in bed.”

Mike says it’s also nice to cook something sentimental. This year he’s making a special dish that his wife, Kat, ate when she was little “…we’re going to be cooking veggie lasagna for dinner that night. She grew up on that…that was her favorite, so it’s the sentimental part, too…you bring back something from their childhood.”

Whatever you decide to do for Valentine’s Day, make it special.

Nothing says “I love you” like making a nice dinner at home for the wife.
