New details in the case of a Georgia man who police say raped and killed a 13 year-old Panama City girl.
Melinda Hinson, 13, was reported missing tuesday night from the Valu Lodge motel on Highway 98 in Panama City. Her body was found in one of the rooms.
On Thursday, Panama City Police say Matthew Caylor, 33, of Cayton, Georgia, confessed to killing the girl. Authorities say he’s a convicted sex offender.
Caylor was staying at the Valu Lodge in a room very close to the Hinson’s.
According to the probable cause affadavit, Caylor raped the 13 year-old, then choked her with his hands.
When Hinson tried to fight back, Caylor reportedly strangled her to death with a telephone cord.
According to the report, Caylor then hid Hinson’s body under the bed and placed the bed frame on her head.
Motel staff found Hinson’s body around noon Thursday.
“He is a sick individual. All I want is justice done. I want him to pay for what he has done severely… That was my 13 year old baby. Adults are supposed to protect children, not hurt them,” says Rhonda McNallin, Hinson’s mother.
Panama City Police have charged Caylor with murder, sexual battery, and failure to register as a sex offender.

You know people are horrible. You don’t trust anyone and even more so with your precious children. I never let my kids out alone after dark. And even more so in a motel room. Why was that child out and alone anyway? and why did they not miss her soon enough to bang on every door in that place to find her? I’d not stopped. Every door would have been beaten down. Not 1 hour or 3 hours, but within a few minutes. I feel sorry for the parents, but they are saying that grown ups are to protect the kids. Well, they know as well as anyone else, there if a preditor on every corner.

I agree with you that people are sick when they do something like this. But I can tell you first hand that Melinda was never out after dark alone. She was walking a dog for a neighbor like she done everyday in the day time. When she didn’t return home by dark her mother and my son the mother’s finacee called the police. They came out and treated this like a run away, but Melinda wouldn’t do that. She was too scared of the dark and wouldn’t leave her mother, her brother, or my son. My son tried to check the other rooms, but he was stopped by the owners and the police. The police wouldn’t check the rooms either. This is a sad thing, but te way I look at it if the police were doing their job in the first place they might have found her body sooner, especially since the man was already in custody for another crime and they knew he was staying at the same motel. As for your information the family was just staying there till their condo was getting ready. Aperson who cares, Debby Patterson!
