It’s crunch time for campaigns as volunteers from both sides hit the streets to push every voter to the polls.
“This is the final stretch, and what we’re focused on is getting out our vote,” said Obama campaign volunteer Happy Johnson.
Johnson traveled from New Orleans to work Florida’s campaign.
“The last 72 hours is the major push to get out the vote,” said McCain campaign volunteer coordinator Teresa Eaton.
Both have been working around the clock to push for votes for their candidates.
“Lots of hours, lots of hours,” said Johnson, “a ton I can’t even think…”
“Enough hours that my husband wonders who I am anymore, he doesn’t see much of me anymore,” said Eaton.
But, this election they had a lot of help.
“We have volunteers making phone-calls… We have volunteers waving signs,” said Eaton, “we have volunteers walking precincts.”
“We have an organized effort to drive voters to the polls, we’re also calling our voters to remind them about voting,” said Johnson, “we have people stationed at the different precincts.”
Democratic leaders say it’s the first time a presidential office has been set up in Bay County separately from the party headquarters, and they say this is their biggest and most organized volunteer effort.
At the republican headquarters they’ve more than doubled their volunteers. The last presidential election brought out 150; this year they had 350.
“People see us sign-waving they pull off the road and join us,” said Eaton.
“This entire campaign is based on the people and it’s based on volunteer efforts,” said Johnson.
As the deadline for voting nears, both sides say they’re anticipating a win with a lot at stake.
