A News 13 follow-up on how the Bay County community turns out for a very worthwhile project. And a big thank you is order for folks who responded. It is the focus of this on your side problem solver report.
Two weeks ago I took you to Millville cemetery one of Bay County’s oldest. Mike Hill, Chairman of the city’s Cemetery Board, told me, the cemetery along with four others, needed a big cleanup. And he needed volunteers. So, I put the word out on Problem Solver.
Last Saturday in Millville, about 30 volunteers turned out to cut grass, weeds and do other chores. Some of those volunteers really stood out in the crowd… inmates from the Bay County jail. Sheriff Frank McKeithen offered the help after watching Problem Solver. The Sheriff says, “the minute I started looking… what a minute… we have a 950 to a thousand inmates sitting out there and a lot of them on their behinds doing nothing…that would be a very good thing for cities and counties to get these inmates out of the jail and cleaning these cemeteries up.”
In all, approximately 100 people showed up to make a difference at the city’s five cemeteries. Mike Hill was excited about the response, “it is just great. The community involvement...want to thank Frank McKeithen from the Sheriff’s Department. Problem Solver has really helped us put a dent in a major problem that we have in maintaining the city cemeteries and hopefully, it is going to continue.” Hill says the Sheriff’s Office and Millville Action Committee is offering additional help in the future.
They plan to finish the cemetery clean up this Saturday. If you are interested, Call Panama City Leisure Services at 872-3199.
