Students who take part in Florida’s voluntary pre-kindergraten program are more likely to be ready for school than those who don’t.

That’s the finding of a new school readiness test.

The results of the test actually show a drop in the percentage of children who tested ready for school. Fifty-four percent of the kids were deemed school-ready last year. That’s down from 58 percent the year before. But it’s still a better rate than for children who do not finish or participate in the voluntary program.

Children last year, though, showed a slight improvement on a letter-naming test with 74 percent rated above average compared to 72 percent the previous year.

Results of a third test on alphabet sound recognition remained unchanged with 54 percent above average.

While the percentage of children who tested ready for school was down four percent, the actual number of students deemed to be school-ready increased. More than 95,000 (95,173) students demonstrated classroom readiness last year year, compared to about 83,000 (83,163) the year before.
