The Walton County Sheriff’s Office continues to look for a man impersonating a police officer. The sheriff’s office says the man is a white male driving a green Chevy Impala. Walton County now uses both marked and unmarked vehicles for enforcement. According to the sheriff’s office any impostor will have a couple of flashing lights on the car and will try and pull you over in a dimly lit area.
The real unmarked law enforcement vehicle, no matter what county, will have lots of lights. They won’t necessarily be a Crown Victoria. Many use SUV’s as well but according to the Walton County Sheriff’s Office there will be lights in all the normal places plus some. Make sure to take a glance at the grill of the car. The Sheriff’s Department takes pains to make sure there are flashing lights inside the grill. This is very expensive to install and maintain so an impostor wouldn’t have this feature.
According to Undersheriff Bill Chapman, law enforcement are trained to allow a bit more time for a car to stop if pulled over by an unmarked vehicle: “At least ease on; go your normal speed and pull into a lighted area. If it’s a true, bona fide police officer, he’s going to pull in there anyway and there won’t be an issue. If he isn’t, he’s probably going to pull away because he doesn’t want attention drawn to him.”
The sheriff’s office recommends if you think an impostor might be pulling you over keep driving until you get to a well populated, well-lit area. Each officer is required to also call into the sheriff’s office when making a traffic stop. Feel free to give the sheriff’s office a call at 892-8111 if you’re suspicious.
WOW… Walton Co. residents your heard WMBB and Bill Chapman, if you are unsure don’t stop….
