Residents of Mountain Valley Road will soon get a break from the Walton County Commission. The road has fallen under disrepair, and at tonight’s commission meeting the county decides to help out.
The debate Tuesday night was whether or not the county should use public money to fix the private road.
Residents of the road and family members spoke out about how the safety of the road is uncertain because it’s fallen under such disrepair and is inaccessible for public safety. Some commissioners questioned whether or not it was even legal.
County Attorney Lynn Hoshihara asserts that it’s ok as long as the county doesn’t take on the responsibility of maintaining the road. Those living in the area say family and friends are afraid to visit because the road is dangerous.
One member of the public pleads “…and I do ask that this be done just on an emergency basis because the ambulances are having trouble getting down there. We have calls from the churches that they can’t get their vans in there to pick our people up. And of course I got there often and we’re all having trouble.”
The commission also recommends that the owners of the land should put a more permanent plan in place for maintaining the road.
The motion was passed by the commission.
