Bay County, Fla:
People are making the most of the last few weeks of Summer vacation, but that’s leading to some outside related injuries. Dr. Timothy Nichols from Emerald Coast Urgent Care in Panama City Beach says he’s seeing a large number of wounds going around. For example, not wearing shoes outside can lead to puncture wounds.
Dr. Nichols says common wounds he is treating include scrapes, abrasions, lacerations, and puncture wounds. When you get a wound, it’s important to try to stop the bleeding by applying pressure, clean the wound with water, and remove any foreign material if you can without causing any more damage, and then cover the wound with a bandage.
Dr. Nichols does emphasize that you should seek medical attention for “large wounds and/or obvious life or limb threatening wounds, [and for ] significant bleeding or bleeding that won’t stop. He says “if the wound has the possibility of foreign material or contamination such as a puncture wound” also seek medical attention. Bite wounds and dirty wounds are reasons to see a doctor as well.
Dr. Nichols stresses that “bleeding that won’t stop is considered a medical emergency.”
