This weekend at Gulf Coast Community College, the Commodores are holding their 2nd Annual men’s high school basketball team camp.
Nine of the panhandles top high school programs are gathering at the Billy Harrison Field House over the span of the next three days to play in a tournament style camp.
Every team gets in at least eight games in the tournament, with the championship game being played on Sunday between the two schools with the best overall records.
Arnold, Bay, Rutherford, Mosley, Cottondale, Walton County, South Walton, Fort Walton Beach, and Blountstown round out the tournament, which has grown from just five schools in its first year, to nine this year.
Gulf Coast Head Coach Jay Powell says it’s something that the school is doing as a community service project, and he also hopes its something that the teams will actually benefit from and will enjoy doing each summer.
“We are doing this as a community service project and also in the future, I hope it will help us with our recruiting locally. We have nine teams this year and we hope that the camp grows in the future. I hope we are getting a good reputation already as being a place that is very organized and we run the games on time,” said Powell.
“It gives each player a lot of minutes and you can actually start refining with games and play kids that you normally might not play in your rotation to see how they are going to react and how they are going to play. You can practice a lot, but you have got to play some games,” said Arnold Head Coach James Baxley.
