Bay County declares state of emergency, monitors Tropical Storm Ida
About 11 a.m. Monday morning Bay County Commission Chairman Bill Dozier signed a declaration of a local state of emergency for Bay County due to potential effects of Tropical Storm Ida.
The declaration is necessary to recoup federal funding associated with possible expenditures related to preparation for or damage from the storm.
Bay County officials continue to monitor and prepare for the effects of Tropical Storm Ida, which is expected to make landfall Tuesday.
The Bay County Utilities Division has been lowering water levels at the Deer Point Reservoir in anticipation of an impending rain event.
Public Works crews are out checking areas prone to flooding to ensure that drainage systems in those areas are working at full capacity. Any road closures caused by the storm will be reported to local media as soon as possible. To report drainage or road problems, please 784-4050.
Storm supplies, such as sandbags, are commercially available and are not provided by Bay County.
School Closures:
After several conference calls this morning, it looks as though we are not expected to get the bulk of the storm, but the most severe weather will be in the early morning on Tuesday. Students’ safety at the bus stops and students’ driving to school would be the main concern. Due to the weather forecasts for tomorrow morning and the strong possibility of road flooding and closures, I am closing all public schools on Tuesday, November 10th. Schools should have no problems associated with this storm; however, we ask all principals to check their schools when conditions allow on Tuesday and notify Dr. John Haley and/or Jimmy Thompson of any problems or needs.
All twelve month employees are to report to work at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 10. Bay District Schools will still be observing Veteran’s Day on Wednesday, November 11 and all offices and schools will be closed.
All night classes at Haney Technical Center scheduled for Monday night have been cancelled. Classes will resume on Tuesday evening.
DUE TO SOME TIME SENSITIVE FINANCIAL REQUIREMENTS, WE WILL HAVE THE SCHOOL BOARD MEETING TOMORROW, TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 10 AT 2 P.M. AS PREVIOUSLY SCHEDULED.
The following meetings/activities scheduled have been canceled:
- Bay Base will be closed on Tuesday, November 10.
- All recognitions previously scheduled for the Board Meeting on Tuesday, November 10 will be re-scheduled.
- Expulsion Hearings for Tuesday, November 10 have been re-scheduled for Tuesday, November 17.
- School Board Workshop for Zoning of Deer Point Elementary scheduled for Monday, November 9 at 5:00 p.m. is canceled.
- All flu shots have been canceled for Tuesday, November 10 and will be re-scheduled.
- All athletic contests and activities scheduled for Monday, November 9 have been canceled; any afternoon events or activities scheduled for Tuesday may be held at the discretion of the principal.
- All Boys and Girls Club facilities will close at 6 p.m. Monday and be closed all day on Tuesday.
The Bay District School Board Zoning Workshop scheduled for Monday, November 9, 2009 at 5:00 P.M. in the Board Room at the Nelson Building located at 1311 Balboa Avenue, has been cancelled. The Bay District School Board Zoning Workshop scheduled for Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. will continue to be held on that date and time.
All FSU Panama City classes, campus activities and operations will take place as scheduled on Tuesday, November 10.

In observance of Veteran’s Day, the FSU Panama City campus will be closed on Wednesday, November 11.
The H1N1 Flu vaccination clinics scheduled for November 10 at Bay Haven School and Everitt Middle School have been cancelled due to possible inclement weather from Hurricane Ida. These schools will be rescheduled. The Bay County Health Department will resume our vaccination clinic schedule with Surfside Middle School on November 12.
Good Shepherd Early Learning Center in Callaway will be closed due to weather conditions. For information, call 871-6600. Panama City Renaissance School and Holy Nativity Episcopal will be closed on Tuesday.
Early Education and Care’s Head Start and Early Head Start Centers will be closed in Bay and Franklin Counties on Tuesday due to the Hurricane Ida. The centers will also be closed on Wednesday for Veteran’s Day. All centers and the main office will re-open on Thursday, November 12.
The GCCC Panama City Campus, North Bay Center, and Tyndall Education Center, will remain open for classes today and tonight, Monday, November 9, Evening classes at the GCCC Gulf/Franklin Center in Port St. Joe have been cancelled for tonight, Monday, November 9. All Gulf Coast Community College campuses and facilities will be open for business as usual tomorrow, Tuesday, November 10.

Business Closures:
The Bay County Chamber Business After Hours to be held Tuesday, November 10, 5:00-7:00 pm at RiverCamps on Crooked Creek HAS BEEN CANCELED. Due to the weather conditions anticipated to reach our area, Both Chamber offices will be closed Tuesday, November 10th. We will also be closed Wednesday, November 11th, honoring Veteran’s Day and will resume regular business hours on Thursday, November 12th.
The Fourteenth Judicial Circuit Court in Bay County will be closed for business on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 in anticipation of Hurricane Ida’s impact on the Gulf Coast. This includes all Bay County Courthouses and Clerk of Court offices.
All Courts in Calhoun, Gulf, Holmes, Jackson, and Washington Counties will remain open on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 unless further notified.
All Fourteenth Judicial Circuit Courts will be closed on Wednesday, November 11, 2009 in honor of Veteran’s Day.

VA Gulf Coast Veterans Health Care System clinic closures
BILOXI, Miss. – Due to the approaching storm, the outpatient clinics in Mobile, Ala., Pensacola, Eglin and Panama City, Fla. will be closed Tuesday.
VA Medical Administration Service clerks are currently contacting patients to reschedule appointments at these VA facilities.
The VA Biloxi Medical Center campus will be open on Tuesday. All clinics are scheduled to reopen during normal business hours on Thursday.
All VAGCVHCS facilities will be closed on Wednesday, Veterans Day.

Yeah, it wasn’t on there yet, when I wrote it. What about GC students who have children in Bay District schools? Obviously the daycares aren’t going to be open… do we take our kids to class with us?
