This winter weather can be hazardous. Power outages, chimney fires and heating related emergencies may put you at risk. That’s why Bay County Emergency Operations wants you to be ready.

To make it simple, the EOC suggests the five “P’s” of cold weather preparedness: protect people, protect plants, protect pets, protect exposed pipes and practice fire safety.

After you’ve gone through the checklist make sure you are stocked with supplies. Put together a kit full of first aid, flashlights, fuel… all the necessities in case you’re stranded without power.

Even though you may be used to living in the Sunshine State, the EOC believes it’s important to stay prepared for cold chills.

“The homes in Florida have less insulation; we are not used to the cold, really frigid temperatures, so this presents a hazard to folks that may live in rural areas,” said EOC Deputy Chief, Brad Monroe.
